Geopolitics Restores the Dollar’s Leadership: How the Strait of Hormuz Conflict Is Reshaping Global Currency Expectations

Global financial markets began the week by sharply reassessing geopolitical risk. The renewed military confrontation between the United States and Iran has once again placed geopolitics at the center of movements across currencies, commodities and government bonds. The U.S. dollar delivered the strongest response, strengthening against most major currencies as investors increased demand for traditional safe haven assets while pricing in the possibility of higher interest rates for longer. At London Hub Global, we view these developments as evidence that financial markets are increasingly linking events in the Middle East with the future direction of global monetary policy rather than viewing them solely as a regional energy security issue.

During Asian trading, the U.S. dollar gained 0.2% against the Japanese yen, reaching 162.075. The euro weakened by 0.1% to $1.1397, while the British pound declined by 0.2% to $1.3374. At the same time, the U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the currency against a basket of six major currencies, rose by 0.1% to 101.13 after earlier reaching its highest level since July 8. We believe this performance confirms the dollar’s continued role as the world’s primary safe haven currency during periods of elevated geopolitical uncertainty. Investors are responding not only to military developments but also to the growing likelihood that major central banks may need to maintain restrictive monetary policies for longer than previously expected.

The latest rally in the U.S. currency was triggered by renewed military exchanges between Washington and Tehran, as well as Iran’s announcement that the Strait of Hormuz had once again been closed following another maritime incident. Before the conflict escalated, approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through this strategic waterway, meaning that any disruption immediately affects global energy markets. As a result, Brent crude futures climbed 4.1% to $79.11 per barrel. At London Hub Global, we analyze this market reaction as a natural consequence of the rising geopolitical risk premium. Until investors receive convincing evidence that shipping operations through the region have fully stabilized, elevated volatility is likely to remain across both commodity and currency markets.

Higher oil prices have simultaneously reinforced expectations that inflationary pressures could intensify once again. According to futures market pricing, the probability of two or more Federal Reserve interest rate increases by the December policy meeting rose to 50.9%, up from 47.6% only days earlier. Analysts note that this reassessment continues to support U.S. Treasury yields while increasing the attractiveness of dollar denominated assets for international investors. We see this as one of the most important signals currently influencing global financial markets because the cost of capital remains a primary driver of international investment flows.

Market participants will now closely monitor upcoming U.S. inflation releases, including the Consumer Price Index, the Producer Price Index and subsequent testimony from Federal Reserve officials. These indicators will help determine whether higher energy prices are beginning to spread into broader inflation across the economy. At London Hub Global, we emphasize that these macroeconomic releases could prove just as influential for the dollar’s future direction as military developments in the Middle East.

Japan also deserves particular attention. The continued weakness of the yen is increasing the cost of imported energy, prompting the Bank of Japan to reassess its economic growth forecasts while placing greater emphasis on inflation risks. Strong domestic demand, continued investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and persistent currency weakness are gradually changing expectations regarding future monetary policy. We believe that if inflation continues to exceed official forecasts, the Bank of Japan could adopt a more restrictive stance than financial markets currently anticipate.

The cryptocurrency market also came under pressure. Bitcoin declined by 2.1% to $62,790.02, while Ether lost 2.3%, falling to $1,779.01. This movement reinforces the view that during periods of acute geopolitical uncertainty, investors continue to favor traditional safe haven assets such as the U.S. dollar and U.S. government bonds while reducing exposure to higher risk digital assets.

For the United Kingdom, these developments carry immediate economic consequences. A stronger dollar combined with rising global oil prices increases the cost of imported energy, places additional pressure on sterling and risks reigniting inflationary pressures. This complicates the Bank of England’s policy decisions as it balances domestic economic conditions against growing external risks. For London, the impact is twofold. Currency markets, fixed income trading and financial risk management activities are likely to benefit from increased volatility, while airlines, transport operators, manufacturers and energy intensive businesses face rising operating costs and tighter financial conditions.

At London Hub Global, we believe that the future direction of global currency markets will depend on two closely connected factors. The first is the evolution of security conditions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the stability of global energy supplies. The second is the extent to which rising energy prices translate into persistent inflation and influence central bank policy decisions. As long as geopolitical uncertainty remains elevated, the U.S. dollar is likely to retain its safe haven appeal. For British investors and businesses, closely monitoring interest rate expectations, energy prices and international capital flows will remain essential for navigating an increasingly volatile financial environment.
