The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is transforming not only software but also the global semiconductor industry itself. The world’s largest technology companies are moving beyond purchasing standard AI accelerators and are increasingly investing in custom processors designed specifically for their own computing workloads. Against this backdrop, startup TYLSemi has secured $43 million in seed funding to develop modular building blocks for next generation AI processors. The market for application specific AI processors is expanding at an unprecedented pace. Companies operating large cloud platforms, generative AI services and high performance computing infrastructure are seeking to replace general purpose solutions with processors optimized for their own software environments. Such designs improve computational efficiency, reduce energy consumption and allow hardware to be tailored to increasingly demanding AI workloads. However, developing these chips remains extremely complex because the critical technologies enabling high speed communication between processing components are controlled by only a handful of companies, including Broadcom and Marvell Technology. We believe this concentration of intellectual property has become one of the primary barriers limiting competition within the custom AI semiconductor market.

TYLSemi founders Mohit Gupta and Sunil Bhardwaj, both former senior executives at Alphawave, propose replacing the traditional monolithic chip design approach with modular chiplets built on open industry standards. Customers would be able to combine individual functional components from multiple suppliers when assembling a complete processor. At London Hub Global, we analyze this strategy as an effort to establish an open semiconductor ecosystem where innovation is driven by the quality of individual technologies rather than by exclusive ownership of proprietary platforms.

Such an architecture has the potential to fundamentally improve the economics of semiconductor development. Instead of designing one massive integrated chip, manufacturers can create specialized modules responsible for computing, memory interfaces, networking, input and output functions or power management. This modular approach accelerates development cycles, improves manufacturing efficiency and significantly lowers the cost of bringing new processors to market. It also enables individual components to be upgraded independently without redesigning the entire processor, an increasingly valuable capability as artificial intelligence evolves at extraordinary speed.

A central element of TYLSemi’s strategy is the adoption of open chiplet interconnection standards. Unlike proprietary technologies that restrict compatibility between components from different vendors, open architectures allow customers to integrate technologies from multiple suppliers into a single package. According to the company’s leadership, greater standardization will accelerate innovation while fostering healthier industry competition. Analysts have observed similar transitions across other technology sectors, where open standards expanded markets, lowered barriers to entry and encouraged the emergence of new participants. We believe semiconductor design is entering a comparable period of structural transformation.

Investor confidence reflects this opportunity. The $43 million financing round was led by Matter Venture Partners with participation from Viola Ventures, GHOVC, Egis Technology and several undisclosed strategic investors from the global semiconductor and AI infrastructure industries. Although their identities remain confidential, the composition of the investor group demonstrates growing interest in alternative approaches to custom semiconductor development. We see this as evidence that major technology companies are increasingly seeking ways to reduce dependence on a limited number of suppliers controlling essential AI infrastructure technologies.

Meanwhile, demand for custom AI processors continues to accelerate. Meta is already collaborating with Broadcom on internally developed AI accelerators, while numerous other technology companies are investing billions of dollars in proprietary semiconductor programs. Massive expansion of data centers, rising computational requirements and the rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence continue to support sustained demand for new processor architectures. At the same time, manufacturers face growing pressure to shorten development timelines while reducing engineering costs. This is precisely where modular chiplet architectures could deliver meaningful competitive advantages by improving flexibility without sacrificing performance.

For the United Kingdom, these developments carry considerable strategic importance. London remains one of the world’s leading financial centers for technology investment, while Britain’s semiconductor ecosystem continues to demonstrate global strengths in processor architecture, chip design and intellectual property licensing. Wider adoption of open chiplet standards could create significant opportunities for British engineering companies, specialist chip developers and venture capital firms investing in AI infrastructure. Increased competition in custom semiconductor development may also strengthen Europe’s broader technology ecosystem while reducing dependence on a relatively small number of global suppliers.
